God
said in the prophets that He would restore the land and gather the
Jewish people from the lands where He had scattered them; "Fear
not. for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and
gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and
to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters
from the ends of the earth;" (Isaiah 43:5,6). Today, in the
land of Israel, we are seeing the fulfillment of this scripture.
Over the past ten years more than one million people have immigrated
back to the home land Israel. With the financial crisis in
the former Soviet Union there is a possibility of one and a half
million more immigrants. Many come hoping that it will be full of
promise for them. Some are escaping bigotry, poverty and/or persecution.
Others are trying to discover the heritage of their fathers. Most
are wanting a better life for their children. With so many immigrants
year after year, the government is only able to provide minimum
aid. These people must quickly provide for themselves in a strange
land with a foreign culture.
After living in Israel for several years and believing the biblical mandate of Genesis 12:3, "And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed" and Romans 15:27, "it hath pleased them verily, and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things." In 1995 David Pyles and Ron Plott sought out a way to be a blessing not only for the Jewish people born in Israel but also to the new immigrants. Thus, in 1997 Project Nehemiah was founded.
The name "Nehemiah" means comfort in the Hebrew language and in the beginning with the help of friends and volunteers Project Nehemiah sought to be a comfort and blessing to immigrants and needy Israelis by providing for their physical needs, such as, food, blankets, kitchen supplies and other essentials.
Since 1997, Project Nehemiah has been formally registered as a tax-exempt organization, recognized by the government of Israel for the sole purpose of humanitarian aide. Project Nehemiah seeks to be a testimony of the love of Christ. These acts of love are personalized with a Shalom card which includes the name of the person who provided the gift. A postcard is then sent back to the donor telling him who received the gift. We do this so that the donor can effectively pray for the recipient. Here is a letter in response to the work of Project Nehemiah:
Dear Sirs,
I was watching
you distribute gifts in Beer Sheeba. My soul was rejoicing. I
realized that even lonely people are not left alone. An amazing
man was distributing gifts, a pleasant translator answered folks'
questions, two wonderful girls were helping. Thanks to everyone
who is involved in such a good activity. Thanks to all who give
their offerings.
Sincerely
yours,
M. Pearlman
Many folks are
coming home, yes, in unbelief but by your outstretched hands of
love many will be able to hear for the very first time a clear presentation
of the love of Christ.
